At the least 274 inmates have escaped from a jail in Nigeria’s Borno state following heavy flooding, the Nigerian Correctional Service mentioned Sunday.
“The flood introduced down the partitions of the correctional services, together with the medium safety custodial middle Maiduguri (MSCC) in addition to the workers quarters within the metropolis,” the service spokesman Abubakar Umar mentioned in a press release.
In keeping with Umar, a minimum of 281 inmates managed to flee whereas they had been being transferred to “a secure and safe facility” and 7 of them had been recaptured later.
Umar mentioned that the service is conscious of escapees’ identities, together with their biometrics and made this data “obtainable to the general public.”
The seek for the inmates is ongoing, he mentioned.
This can be a creating story and can be up to date.
